NSW dynamo, David Warner, was named joint KFC Twenty20 Big Bash Player of the Year at the 2009/10 State Cricket Awards in Melbourne today (March 15), while several of his RTA SpeedBlitz Blues team mates featured in the Johnnie Walker ACA Teams of the Year.
Warner, who made 170 runs at an average of 34 in this year’s Big Bash, polled 12 votes, the same as West Indian Kieron Pollard who was representing South Australia.
Warner was also last night named the RTA SpeedBlitz Blues Twenty20 Player of the Year at the Steve Waugh Medal for his performances in the 2009/10 Big Bash and Airtel Champions League.
Phillip Hughes placed third in the race for Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield Player of the Year with 14 votes, three behind the eventual winner, Queenslander Chris Hartley.
Hughes’ RTA SpeedBlitz Blues’ team mates, Trent Copeland and Steven Smith, finished in equal fourth position with 13 votes each.
The RTA SpeedBlitz Blues also finished second in the Benaud Spirit of Cricket Award with South Australia taking the trophy.
This Spirit of Cricket Award is based on points given by umpires across the Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield, Ford Ranger Cup and KFC Twenty20 Big Bash competitions.
Today’s Awards also saw the naming of the Johnnie Walker ACA Teams of the Year.
The RTA SpeedBlitz Blues were well represented in the Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield Team of the Year through Phillip Hughes, Steven Smith, Usman Khawaja and Trent Copeland.
Phil Jaques was named in the Ford Ranger Cup Team of the Year while David Warner was selected in the Twenty20 Team of the Year.
