Cricket NSW will contribute $350,000 towards the construction of a multi-purpose indoor sports complex at Bankstown Memorial Oval.

The $4.2 million project will include a four lane indoor centre, change rooms and a gymnasium, as well as a conference centre. The centre won’t just serve cricketers either with a number of sports set to benefit from the new facilities.

The project was given a massive boost today with the Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Anthony Albanese, announcing the Federal Government would contribute $2.7 million to the project.

This facility is a true community venture with the Bankstown District Cricket Club, Bankstown Sports Club and Bankstown City Council also making significant contributions to the project.

Bankstown Oval has been the stomping ground of many a NSW cricketer, including Mark and Steve Waugh, Len Pascoe, Jeff Thomson, Wayne Holdsworth, Steve Small and David Freedman.

The Oval has hosted First Class fixtures, as well as men’s and women’s domestic one-day games and a number of women’s Internationals. In 2009/10 it was also judged as the Sydney Cricket Association’s First Grade Ground of the Year.
